Duquesa, which is commonly known as Puerto de la Duquesa, is one of the Costa del Sol’s best kept secrets. This quaint village is within a forty minute travelling time of Malaga Airport, but it has the feel of being a traditional Spanish village, without the usual throng of tourists. People are attracted to Duquesa as it has a lot more natural scenery than other resorts found in the Costa del Sol. There are restrictions in place to prevent too many holiday developments from being built to keep the area manageable whilst providing all the services you would expect on holiday. The area to the west of the marina, known as Castillo de la Duquesa, was renowned for producing a paste known as “Garum” during the Roman period. The paste was made from fermented fish and was known as “Gentleman’s Relish”.
Main Tourist Attractions
One of the biggest attractions of Duquesa is its unspoilt, clean and uncrowded beaches. There is a beautiful long stretch of sand offering watersports, diving or just a chance to relax in the sun. The beach to the west of the town, near to the old castle, is popular with families as the waves are not as rugged; this makes it the perfect, quiet place to spend time with the children. Duquesa also offers a fantastic golf course and there are other leisure facilities such as tennis, badminton and a gym located at the Country Club. Lying to the west of the marina is the Castillo de la Duquesa, an 18th century fortress and small hamlet. Remains of the Roman settlement in this area can be viewed as well as the remains of a beautiful mosaic floor of a Roman bathhouse. For the energetic visitor, access to many trails can be found nearby, giving you a chance to explore the wonderful mountain scenery surrounding the town.
